The difference between a steady light and a flashing light is the difference between 'this week' and 'pull over now.'
Usually not an emergency. Common causes:
Get it checked within the week.
This is serious. A flashing light means:
Stop driving. Call us immediately.
Here are the codes we see most often — and what they actually mean for your vehicle.
Catalytic converter efficiency below threshold. Could be the converter itself, or a failing O2 sensor that's been causing damage. We find the root cause first.
Engine misfire in one or more cylinders. Causes range from a $15 spark plug to a $900 coil pack to a head gasket. Diagnosis tells the difference.
Engine running too lean. Common causes: vacuum leak, bad MAF sensor, or dirty fuel injectors. Usually a $200–$400 fix.
Evaporative emission system leak. Often just a loose gas cap ($0 fix) or a bad purge valve ($150–$300). Always check the cap first.
Mass airflow sensor reading out of range. Causes rough idle, poor fuel economy, and surging. Clean or replace the sensor ($150–$400).
Transmission control module has set a fault. Could be a solenoid, sensor, or early internal wear. Get it scanned before it gets expensive.
A code is a clue. A diagnosis is the answer. Here's the difference.
You can clear the code, but it will come back if the underlying problem isn't fixed. Clearing it without fixing the cause just delays the diagnosis. If the light returns within 50–100 miles of resetting, the fault is still active. Stop chasing the light and fix the cause.
Depends on the code. A steady light is usually non-emergency — loose gas cap, O2 sensor, emissions issue. A flashing light means stop driving immediately. Active misfires can destroy your catalytic converter in a matter of miles. When in doubt, call us.
A scan gives you a number. A diagnostic tells you why that number is there. P0420 could mean a $250 O2 sensor or a $1,200 catalytic converter. We inspect the actual system — not just read the code — so you pay for the right repair.
In our experience: loose or bad gas cap (P0455/P0456), failing O2 sensor (P0136/P0141), catalytic converter efficiency (P0420), and ignition misfires (P0300–P0308). We see these every week and can fix them all quickly.
